Pineapple And Pub Journey

Duration: Full Day Depart Port Elizabeth on our luxury coach for a one and half hour journey to Port Alfred. The port has had many names, but finally, in 1860 it was named Port Alfred after Queen Victoria’s second son. The port flourished for many years, but the tempo dropped in 1881 when the railroad was laid from Port Alfred to Grahamstown and onto Port Elizabeth. Today the Royal Alfred Marina boasts the most majestic homes with their private jetties along the Kowie River Estuary. So much to see – inside the Kowie History Museum, the 1820 Settlers Card Index, highlighting their families and descendants. Then it’s off to Bathurst, on the way a quick visit to the 43 Air School, where SAAF and RAF pilots trained during World War II – a war time memorial was erected in memory of those pilots that died whilst training … this area is steeped in history. Down the road, just a short journey to biggest Pineapple in the World – what a vista from its observation platform, as you gaze across the Pineapple and Chicory country side. Built in 1990, the man made Pineapple has its own 60 seater auditorium. Then it’s a short drive to Bathurst on our way we visit the Agricultural Museum – 1300 different implements, then a look at the 1820 Settlers Toposcope, that was set up in 1859 with all the names of the Settlers – fascinating Then a peep inside St John’s Anglican Church dating back to 1834 – interestingly a section of Queen Elizabeth II Coronation carpet is displayed in the church, which was utilised as a fortress during the Xhosa war. Now to the Old Bradshaw Mill and its Millrace, where the spinning of wool began in 1827. The mill was built in 1827, partially destroyed by the Xhosas in 1835 and only restored in 1963. Finally, we arrive at the Pig and Whistle, in Bathurst – you won’t believe it, but it is the oldest licensed pub in South Africa, founded by Thomas Hadley in 1831 – enjoy a delicious lunch and a beer in this traditional pub, roll back the years before we depart for Port Elizabeth, what a historic Journey
